An atomic bomb, also known as a fission bomb, is a type of explosive device derived from nuclear reactions. In contrast, a hydrogen bomb (nuclear fuel through the joining of separate atomic nuclei) is a different type of weapon.

Fissile Material

Types of Atomic Bombs
There are two primary designs of atomic bombs: the Gun-Type and the Implosion-Type designs.
Gun-Type Design
This design involves the use of conventional explosives to fire one piece of fissile material into another, achieving a supercritical mass. This method is less efficient but was used in the Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Implosion-Type Design
The more efficient design, the implosion-type, uses a shell of conventional explosives surrounding a sub-critical mass of fissile material. This design compresses the material into a supercritical state, making it the preferred method in modern atomic bombs.
