Are Hero MotoCorp Bikes Still a Good Choice in 2023?
Are Hero MotoCorp Bikes Still a Good Choice in 2023?
The Dual Legacy of Hero and Honda
Hero Honda is a brand name that often causes confusion, given that Hero is a separate brand from Honda. They both use the word 'Honda' in their engines, leading to a perception of shared quality. However, the reality is that, while Hero uses Honda engines, their engineering and overall biking experience can differ significantly. Take, for instance, the 2008 Hero Honda CD Deluxe that I’ve ridden for 1 lakh kilometers (about 62,000 miles). Despite its longevity, the bike has retained its performance and reliability. On the other hand, my friend’s Hero HF Deluxe, with around 40,000 kilometers (about 25,000 miles) on the odometer, has shown signs of wear and tear, particularly in the suspension, making the ride a lot less comfortable and efficient.
The Competency of Hero Engines
While Hero has achieved a certain level of reputation in the Indian market, it falls short in terms of engine efficiency compared to Honda. It’s a bit like removing Suzuki from Maruti and asking Maruti to produce its own car engines. The outcome would likely be subpar, just as Hero Honda engines often fall short of the expectations set by their counterparts from Honda. This disparity in engineering quality is not unique to Hero and Heroes. Other Indian companies like Mahindra and Tata, while well-known, are not as globally recognized as Japanese brands like Toyota and Honda, largely due to their engineering capabilities.
Advice for Current and Potential Buyers
With those points in mind, my advice to current and potential buyers of Hero MotoCorp bikes is straightforward. If you own a Hero bike, and it’s still running well, providing good mileage, then keep it. Don't be swayed by the allure of newness or fancy features. Embrace what works and stick with it. After all, the tried-and-tested design and engineering of Hero bikes have proven their worth over time. Whether you’re looking at one of their compact scooters or their sturdy motorcycles, the reliability and cost-effectiveness of Hero bikes are undeniable.
Other Considerations
While Hero bikes continue to be a good choice for many, it's important to consider various factors such as personal preferences, specific model features, and intended use. Newer models of Hero bikes often come with advancements in fuel efficiency, performance, and technology. However, the legacy bikes retain their charm and functionality. Additionally, the fuel efficiency, affordability, wide service network, durability, reliability, and good resale value remain key selling points for Hero bikes.
Conclusion
In summary, when deciding whether Hero MotoCorp bikes are a good choice in 2023, consider the lessons from the comparison with a Honda engine, the advice from personal experiences, and the broader context of the brand's engineering capabilities. With a bit of insight into their strengths and weaknesses, you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs.
