As mathematics has grown in abstraction and specialization over the last century, it's nearly impossible for anyone to be an expert in every subfield. The best mathematicians might tie together a few subfields throughout their career, such as Terry Tao and Shing-Tung Yau, but it's virtually impossible to be an expert in every subfield today. Even within a field like topology, people typically specialize in areas like algebraic topology or differential topology.

There's a popular misconception that equates high intelligence with proficiency in technical fields. While there are geniuses in the fields of composition and visual art, these individuals often know little about mathematics, just as most mathematicians may not have extensive knowledge of music. We should give more credit for intelligence to workers in non-scientific fields of endeavor.
