Balancing Medicine and Engineering: What Relevance to You?

Our nation has witnessed many outstanding individuals who have chosen between pursuing a career as a doctor or an engineer. The decision ultimately depends on the path one chooses to follow.

If one's goal is to help improve the health of individuals, a medical course is essential. Conversely, if the aim is to enhance the health and productivity of industries, then an engineering course is the ideal path. However, it's crucial to pursue whatever course one chooses with the associated knowledge and application to ensure success and fulfillment.

My Journey

My father, a distinguished doctor, initially wanted me to follow in his footsteps and attend medical school. However, my interest lay elsewhere. I was more inclined towards creating things, and later, I pursued a career in electrical engineering and eventually, became a software engineer. My work primarily involves medical imaging, and I have been successful and happy with my professional journey.

Initially, I did not enjoy subjects like biology and organic chemistry. However, I made the right decision, and my father acknowledged my success and happiness. Both paths of medicine and engineering can have a significant impact. My product manager takes pride in quantifying the positive impact of the equipment we've developed, such as ultrasound imaging devices. Over the span of 20 years, we have helped countless individuals, not only patients but also my family members.

My Contribution

My role in the medical imaging team was multifaceted. I led the early design process and designed several components. I also worked on testing the system and automating the measurement of output power. Additionally, I worked on the software that stores patient data, as well as automating the build process and developing remote tools for service personnel. My work was also shared with other international teams working on similar ultrasound devices. Over the years, I conducted problem report reviews and managed software releases.

While I may not have invented new imaging techniques or diagnostic methods, I played a crucial role in bringing these essential devices to hospitals and clinics, ensuring they became part of the medical landscape.
