Behind the Scenes: Thoughts on Changing Careers from a Software Engineer
Have you ever thought about changing careers while being a Software Engineer? I certainly have, and the idea has struck me at various moments during my workday. From the yearning for a simpler life as a tea maker, to daydreaming about the freedom of being an Uber driver, every profession captures a fragment of my imagination and curiosity. This article delves into these fantasies and explores why I still choose to remain a Software Engineer, dreaming of a big career switch.
The Cycle of a Software Engineer
My daily routine as a Software Engineer in an IT company is predictable yet rigorous. Starting early in the morning at 7 AM, my day kicks off with hard work that can extend until 9 or 10 PM, depending on the workload. The long hours aren't the only challenge; managerial pressure and the lack of holidays add to the stress. My evenings are usually spent on dinner and a brief conversation with my family before hitting the sheets, and then the cycle starts anew.
Daydreams and the Realities of the Profession
I have entertained numerous thoughts about changing careers. Sometimes, the simple pleasure of drinking a good cup of tea makes me wonder what it would be like to be a tea maker, earning just as much as I do. Other times, I hear tales of Ola/Uber drivers buying land or owning houses, which tempts me to imagine a similar lifestyle. Preparing for exams alongside my work has made me consider becoming a Bank PO, while frustration and a desire for change have led me to consider a career in farming.
My ambition to stay close to my hometown and parents was the catalyst for thinking about being a shop owner. Splurging half of my salary on a night out has made me dream of becoming a bartender, and hitting the gym has inspired the idea of becoming a gym instructor. Feeling the daily grind has led me to contemplate becoming a freelancer, and receiving positive feedback on my writing on Quora has made me dream of becoming a writer. Life's struggles have made me think about becoming a monk or a priest for solace and spiritual reasons. The idea of becoming a roadie has also flashed when watching films, but why would I stop being a Software Engineer?
Why Remain a Software Engineer?
Despite all these thoughts, I remain a Software Engineer, dreaming of a big career switch. The thought of changing careers is a recurring dream that peaks my interest in exploring other professions. However, the real challenge is the stark reality of how fulfilling my current role can be. The tech industry offers endless opportunities for growth and innovation, and a love for problem-solving keeps me motivated.
