Believing in God in the Face of Science: A Dialogue with Jessica

Understanding the Intersection of Science and Belief

Hello Jessica,

One thing you need to remember is that many agnostics and atheists often revolve their worldviews around the concepts of 'scientism' and 'reason'. This means they base much of their understanding on the ideas and beliefs held by scientists. While they believe in the power and insights of these scientific tools, they often fail to recognize that science itself can only explain the mechanisms of the universe, not its underlying purpose or creator.

Science as a Tool to Explain, Not to Explain Away

It's important to understand that science is a tool meant to explain the creative process and natural phenomena, but it cannot explain the existence of a divine mover known as God. Many of the theories from a scientific perspective about the origins of the universe are based on conjecture and assumption. The Bible, for instance, states, 'For when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened' (Romans 1:21). The Apostle Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament, understood the philosophers and reasoners of his time and was able to provide counterarguments based on his own understanding of the weaknesses of their reasoning.

Engaging with Scientism and Assumptions

Listening to the reasons scientists and agnostics give to exclude God is a crucial step. Understand where their assumptions come from and know your own reasons for holding a counter-position. Present your arguments with confidence, for you are not alone. I have personally engaged with agnostics and scientists and I remind you, do not be intimidated. They are not infallible and are just humans who make assumptions based on flawed reasoning.

God and the Unseen

Science does not describe worldviews, where we came from, or what happens when we die. It merely provides tools to understand the mechanisms of the natural world. Jesus Christ addresses these questions, and it's a choice you must make. Believe it or not, your free choice is a gift from God. Science is indeed good, but it does not define us, as it is a human pursuit to understand the world.

The Unseen and the Creator

Pick up your brain and challenge the unanswerable questions of science. Science proves that God is a true God, unseen but known. Just as we cannot see gravity but we know it exists because without it, the earth would float away or be crushed by too much force, God is a presence in our lives and the universe.

God is described as perfect, with no beginning or end, the one who has always been. Furthermore, God is not created himself but is the true creator of everything. Consider this illustration: in a classroom, 10 students are asked, "Who created God?" The first student might say, "God created himself." The second might ask, "How did the creator come into existence?" and the third might ask, "Who created the creator?" This cycle can go on infinitely, but the point is, God does not need a creator because he is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end (Revelation 1:8; Revelation 21:6). God is the logos that created everyone and everything. Nothing was made without him (John 1:3). Everything is possible with God (Matthew 19:26). Jesus himself said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). And, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16-18).
