Creating a Flamethrower for Emergency Defense: Safe and Ineffective Options

It is strongly recommended NOT to experiment with flamethrowers for any purpose. This article is strictly for informational purposes and should not be used to create or conduct illegal activities.

From my experience in my sometimes misguided youth, engine starter fluid is a far better and potentially more dangerous choice than many other options. However, it is important to note that using any flammable aerosol inappropriately can lead to serious injuries and legal action.

Engine Starter Fluid as a Flamethrower

Engine starter fluid, when sprayed over a pocket lighter, produces a solid yellow flaming stream over 5 feet and continues to burn for quite some time. The key to this is to carefully remove the nozzle tip to control the flow. However, do not forget about the federal law regarding the misuse of materials in the commission of a crime.

Engine starter fluid, while effective, can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Specifically, when the spray is stopped, it cannot burn into the can due to a positive valve. However, it can continue to burn at the spray nozzle or any that has dripped on the can. It is highly recommended to always wear a water-soaked glove to protect your hands.

Other Flammable Aerosols for Flamethrowers

When it comes to creating a flamethrower for a specific purpose, such as self-defense, the best options are typically those that produce a strong flame and lots of smoke. Hair spray, for instance, produces a large flame and can be effective in this context. My favorite for killing big spiders is Lysol. After spraying the spider, I would then ignite what I had just sprayed, which worked pretty well.

When it comes to a flamethrower that is good for defense but not much more, you want it to have a bright flash and noise with minimal damage to the target. An orange rind misted with fuel and ignited can also be effective, as can a few sprays of bug spray. Spy stories often depict using hair spray or bug spray, which are short-range options.

For long-range flamethrowers that can be used away from the target, less volatile petroleum oils are a better choice. They stay liquid and heavy, allowing them to reach farther and stick to surfaces while burning. Some people use gasoline or propane, which are short-range and can deplete oxygen in enclosed spaces. A real flame thrower should be used from a safe distance to avoid personal injury and to ensure its effectiveness.

Remember, the use of any flammable aerosol to create a flamethrower is highly dangerous and illegal. Engage in such activities only if you are prepared to face serious consequences, including legal action and personal injury. Instead, consider safer and more effective forms of self-defense.
