Despite the acknowledgment that the environment needs improvement for every child, the issue remains urgent. This article aims to address the steps necessary to foster an inclusive environment, ensuring that all students, including nonbinary and transgender students, feel safe and respected.
The Current Climate in Owasso High School
The recent bullying incidents in Owasso have been deeply concerning. A 13-year-old student reportedly faced verbal and emotional abuse, feeling unsupported by a school that seemed to prioritize combat sports and physical activities over the mental and emotional well-being of all its students. Another incident highlighted the callous attitude towards students’ experiences, with one student being dismissed when they mentioned not engaging in combat sports or fighting.
These incidents reflect a broader issue of a hostile environment that requires immediate attention. As a concerned grandparent, I was deeply upset to hear about these instances and took action by joining a walkout and holding a sign that emphasized the need to address the issue of dismissive attitudes towards nonviolent students.
Steps to Foster an Inclusive Environment
To create a truly inclusive environment at Owasso High School, several key steps must be taken:
