The State of Faculty and Infrastructure

The faculty and infrastructure at the NIT Rourkela's Control and Automation branch are deeply concerning. A common complaint is the frequent unavailability of the professor for classes, with some professors conducting classes only when students actively seek them out. This absence is particularly detrimental as practical lab sessions are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. For instance, a respected department specializing in Advanced Power Electronics reports that no professors are willing to conduct labs, which is a significant drawback for students aiming for hands-on experience.

Furthermore, the placement scenario is abysmal. The absence of any job opportunities and career prospects further compounds the issues for students. Many students leave the college due to a lack of job readiness and support from the institution. This is detrimental to their personal and professional development.

Several incidents highlight the poor quality of teaching. For example, one professor who teaches Advanced Power Electronics often does not adhere to the scheduled timings and requires students to invite him for the classes. This is not a one-time issue but a recurring problem. Additionally, rumors and allegations about the director and head of the department (HoD) are common, with accusations of incompetence and favoritism.

Other professors, like those in the ESC (Electrical System Control) specialization, also face scrutiny. An incident involving a Ph.D. student of the HoD led to biased marking, affecting the grades of other students. Similarly, a renowned professor in PED (Power Electronics and Drives) is criticized for his lack of knowledge and repetitive teaching style, despite holding a high-paying job.

In the CA (Control and Automation) specialty, only one professor is highly appreciated for his teaching, but the associated teaching assistant is reportedly unintelligent and unhelpful. This has raised concerns about the overall quality of education and the importance of staff beyond mere supervision.

While the program does offer a 14k monthly stipend and the convenience of being a MHRD Tier-I degree holder, these perks are outweighed by the numerous drawbacks. Students often feel that they learn very little and that the professors are more focused on political maneuvering than actual teaching.
