Conversely, if the receiver's window size is 8 KB and the sender's congestion window is 16 KB, the transmission will again occur at 8 KB. The sender calculates its congestion window size based on network properties such as delays, traffic, and bandwidth, while the receiver calculates its window size based on its buffer size.
Establishing the Congestion Window
When a TCP connection is established, the sender initializes its congestion window to the size of the maximum segment available on the connection. It then sends a single maximum segment. If this segment is acknowledged by the receiver before it times out, the sender adds another segment, doubling the size of its congestion window and sending two segments (2n). As each segment is acknowledged by the receiver, the congestion window size increases by one maximum segment, doubling its previous size.
The process continues until either a timeout occurs or the size of the receiver's congestion window is reached. If a timeout occurs, the sender reduces the segment size and the congestion window by half. This approach helps maintain a stable window size until it receives confirmation from the receiver, after which it can increase the window size again.
