Graduates are encouraged to consider professorial roles either inITD or other prestigious universities. Those inclined towards research may also opt for combined PhD programs aimed at specialized areas.
Industry and Job Placement
If your primary goal is to secure a job after graduation, attention should be given to continuous improvement in your grades and development of soft skills such as coding, communication, and problem-solving. The recruitment process in companies such as core companies is less likely to include physics-related questions. Instead, profiles like management trainee, software developer, and data analyst are more commonly sought after.
Public Sector Units (PSUs) and Research Organizations
To work with organizations like ISRO, DRDO, and BARC, a higher academic qualification such as a BSc or MSc in physics is typically required. While IITDEngineering Physics graduates cannot directly apply for PSU positions, certain PSUs consider related fields on a case-by-case basis. ITI graduates from the EP program can apply for roles that are open to any BTech background.
Advice for Aspiring Students
For students who are interested in a career in Engineering Physics, my advice is to only choose BTech in EP if you are utterly committed to a life in physics. Those struggling with EP have much to be positive about. Only 1 student from the non-EP, non-CSE batch at IITD has managed to secure a core company placement, while the majority have found placement in non-core roles. Many opt for MS in CSE, Data Science, and even pursue seats in IIMs. In essence, all paths are equally viable.
Post-Graduation Opportunities
Most IITD Engineering Physics graduates leverage their skills to find employment in finance and technology companies, where they benefit from the robust on-campus placement opportunities. Only a small fraction of graduates pursue further academic and research pursuits, either teaching, conducting research, or working in international research organizations such as CERN and NASA. In India, they can continue work with prestigious organizations like CSIR, BARC, and ISRO.
