Euphoria and Resilience: My Journey to King’s College London
Two distinct moments in my academic career sent me spiraling into euphoria. One was when I received a conditional offer from King’s College London (KCL). The second, an unconditional offer, was even more unexpected and thrilling. Let me recount these pivotal moments.
From Rejection to Conditional Offer
Back in January, King’s College London was the first university to offer me a conditional admission, which was a significant moment. Meanwhile, Edinburgh University had also extended an offer. However, I was quite resistant to moving to Scotland, plus they required a higher conditional offer. This seemed bizarre, especially given my recent surgery to remove the gallbladder.
Things got even more complicated when I received my results. Just a few days before the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) results were released, I was rejected by Imperial College London (Imperial) and University College London (UCL). The timing couldn’t have been more timing or confusing. I had put in a lot of effort recently, but the results showed a stark contrast to my expectations.
Academic Struggles and Disappointment
The International Advanced Level (IAL) A2 scores were a serious blow. I had put forth a lot of effort in my studies, especially in Further Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and achieved four As. However, the outcome was significantly worse than anticipated.
Concerns about the hassle of returning to the UK decimated any remaining hopes of appealing. This had a profound impact on my psychological state. I was shocked and disheartened to see the results at my father’s office.
Unexpected Hurdle, Unconditional Offer, and Reflective Victory
Alas, instead of giving up hope completely, something unexpected happened. Ibasho! I received an unconditional offer based on my non-academic achievements. This was a significant relief, as I had managed to articulate my unique journey, including being a victim of secondary school bullying while maintaining a strong academic profile and analytical skills. Additionally, I demonstrated my proficiency in English.
The news sent me into a euphoric state. I couldn’t help but scream so loud that my father had to ask me to leave the office. This unexpected turn in my academic journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and a different kind of academic resilience.
Adaptation is no small feat. However, this second chance truly belonged to King’s College London. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to study here, and one of my aspirations is to establish a scholarship for students like me who may need the same opportunity but lack the financial means.
Reflection and Gratitude
After a decade of setbacks, I received a long-awaited acceptance from King’s College London. It has brought a sense of belonging and renewed purpose. The resilience I had to muster through my struggles has prepared me to navigate this next phase of my academic life with renewed vigor and passion.
I am deeply grateful to King’s College London for giving me a second chance, and I am determined to make the most of this opportunity.
Stay resilient and believes in your journey no matter the setbacks and challenges. Nothing is impossible if you keep pushing.
