Student Experience Through Personal Narrative

I am a 2017 graduate with a background in Electronics and Communications Engineering. After realizing my true passion for computer science through the GATE-2019 exam, I decided to apply for the in CSE program at IIT Madras. After a challenging application process, I was fortunate to secure a place in the fall of 2019.

The Application Process

The application process for the in CSE program at IIT Madras is competitive and focuses on both academic merit and research potential. Here's a detailed breakdown of the process:

The written test and interview process are mandatory for all applicants. The shortlisting for the interview is done in two stages: first, applicants are shortlisted based on their GATE scores and undergraduate percentages, and then further shortlisted based on the written test performance.

Written Test: April 30th, 2019

Around 880 applications were received, and about 390 applicants were shortlisted for the written test. The test was held in the CSE department and started at 2:15 PM. It consisted of two parts:

Objective Part (120 minutes): 30 questions, with each correct answer carrying 2 marks, and each wrong answer carrying -0.5 marks. The questions covered topics from GATE syllabus and some additional questions on signals and systems. Subjective Part (30 minutes): Two questions, one on algorithm design and coding, and another on a given problem to solve and explain.

Interview: May 1st, 2019

The interview was held in the morning, and all candidates went through document verification and interviewing. There were three panels, and candidates could choose their preferred subject for the interview. The interview questions ranged from theoretical topics to practical programming skills. Here's a personal account of the interview experience:

Interview Details

When asked about my background, I mentioned that I had not been actively preparing for the exam and had decided to start in the final four months. Despite this, I managed to secure a place in the interview. The interview focused heavily on my subject of choice, Theory of Computation, and involved both theoretical and practical questions. I faced questions ranging from designing algorithms to explaining the working of a finite automaton and the difference between deterministic and non-deterministic pushdown automata.

Overall, the interview was a thorough test of my knowledge and understanding of the subject, and I was happy to have the opportunity to share my perspectives and knowledge with the interview panel.

weeks later, I received a letter of admission, and my perseverance and hard work finally paid off. The in CSE program at IISC proved to be a challenging yet rewarding experience, and I highly recommend it to any student who is passionate about computer science and research.
