Any event has a portion that has already occurred, the past, and another portion that has not yet occurred, the future. The example of an apple falling from a tree illustrates this concept. When observing the event, we see the apple on the tree first, then it detaches and falls, and finally, it strikes the ground. There is an interval between the instant the apple detached itself from the tree and the instant it hit the ground. We measure this interval in seconds and can calculate the speed of the apple's fall if the distance is known, highlighting the close relationship between distance, time, and speed.
