This voltage, often referred to as ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC), plays a crucial role in efficient long-distance power transmission.

Understanding Ultra-High Voltage Transmission in India

India has been facilitating the deployment of 800 kV UHVDC lines for the purpose of long-distance power transmission. The Vindhyachal–Champa line, commissioned in 2014, was the first of its kind, marking a significant milestone in the country's power transmission capabilities. These high-voltage lines are specifically designed to improve efficiency and minimize energy losses over vast distances.

1200 kV UHV AC Transmission in India

Beyond 800 kV, India is also making significant strides in UHVAC (Ultra-High Voltage Alternating Current) technology. The 1200 kV UHVAC National Test Station, located in Bina, Madhya Pradesh, is the world's highest voltage level UHVAC substation. This state-of-the-art facility is owned and operated by PowerGrid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a key player in India's power sector.

Technical Advantages and Future Prospects

The 1200 kV UHVAC lines are expected to transmit between 6000 and 8000 MW of power. This system offers a higher power transfer capacity per meter of right-of-way (ROW) in comparison to traditional 400 kV and 800 kV transmission systems. However, as of the latest updates, the highest voltage transmission line in India remains 765 kV AC, as erected by Power Grid Corporation for interstate connectivity throughout the country. Work on 800 kV is also in progress.

DC Transmission in India

In addition to AC transmission, India is also focusing on DC transmission technology. A project is currently under construction for a -800 kV HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) line from Champa to Kurukshetra in Haryana, also managed by Power Grid Corporation. This project aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of power transmission across long distances.
