What is the ETC Management System by RFID Technology?

The advancement in ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) management systems using RIFD (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has revolutionized the way tolls are collected on highways. Initially introduced in the United States in the late 1970s, ETC technology allows for efficient and automated toll payments, significantly reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the overall driving experience.

History and Development of ETC

Since its early trials in the United States in 1988, the ETC system has proven to be a valuable tool for recovery of highway investments. In 1995, Japan extended its ETC system across the entire country and established comprehensive standards for non-stop toll collection. Today, Japan stands as a leader in the research and application of ETC systems in Asia.

How Does the ETC Management System Work?

The ETC management system relies on RFID tags as data carriers, enabling seamless data exchange through radio wave transmission. This technology allows for remote reading of data from the toll lane using UHF RFID readers and tags. Upon entering the toll lane, the RFID tag is activated by microwave signals from the reader, sending vehicle information such as license plate number, vehicle category, owner information, levy status, and vehicle operation records.

The toll lane entrance reader captures the information stored in the RFID tag, calculates the toll based on predefined standards, and updates the tag with the deduction information. On exit, the lane RFID reader reads the information in the RFID card, which is then uploaded to the lane controller. The controller verifies the account's validity, performs the deduction, and uploads data to the toll station management system. The toll station management system transmits the collected data to the management center, which monitors and stores the information. In case of invalid or no RFID card, the ramp is blocked, and vehicles are intercepted.

Management Center and Settling Center Functions

The management center manages and stores the data uploaded by the system. The settlement center then processes the charging information transmitted by the management center, establishes reports, and transmits the statistical data to the bank. The bank then deducts the toll from each account and calculates the balance, transferring it to the corresponding account, and generating a statement for the settlement center to store and file.

Benefits of ETC Management Systems

ETC management systems offer numerous benefits, including enhanced efficiency at highway entrances and exits, high security, large storage capacity, and multi-card recognition. Additionally, they support the rapid recognition of high-speed vehicles and contribute significantly to highway modernization. The system's capabilities have led to its adoption in various industries, such as ETC, intelligent parking, airports, smart new retail, smart grids, asset tracking, warehousing, logistics, supply chain management, and Industry 4.0.
