How to Access BIOS with Windows 10 During Startup

When your computer boots up or restarts, control is passed to the BIOS, which conducts the power-on test and loads the operating system. For Windows 10 users, accessing the BIOS directly can be a bit tricky, but with a few steps, you can do so. This guide will walk you through the process of entering the BIOS using both the standard method and the Windows 10 Advanced Start Menu.

Access BIOS Using Standard Method

The standard method for entering the BIOS Setup Utility is to tap a specific function key while the computer is booting. Depending on the model of your machine, this function key is either F1 or F2.

Some systems also require holding down the Fn key while pressing the F1 or F2 key. If the F1 through F12 keys on your keyboard are colored orange or blue, holding the Fn key is necessary. Conversely, if the colors are white, there is no need to hold the Fn key.

Access BIOS Using Windows 10 Advanced Start Menu

For users who prefer using the Windows 10 Advanced Start Menu to access BIOS, follow these detailed steps:

Navigate to Settings by clicking the gear icon on the Start menu. Select Update Security from the settings menu. Choose Recovery from the left menu. Click Restart Now under the Advanced startup section. The computer will reboot to a special menu. Click on Troubleshoot. Select Advanced options. Click UEFI Firmware Settings. If this option is not visible, select Startup Settings instead and then press F10 when the system restarts.

During the restart process, tap the function key (typically F1 or F2) to access the BIOS.

Additional Tips for Assembled Computers

If you have an assembled computer, using the Del key usually takes you directly to the BIOS. However, if you are using a manufacturer's computer, the keys can differ. Common BIOS keys for manufacturers include:

F10 - HP F2 - ACER F1 - DELL

Refer to your computer's manual for specific BIOS key instructions.
