How to Land a Job at Big Tech Companies Without Connections
Many believe that landing a job at big tech companies like Google, Facebook, or Microsoft requires having access to connections or inside contacts. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. The best way to secure a position in the tech industry is to focus on the quality of your application and your unique value proposition.
How Big Tech Companies Hire
Companies like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft make hiring decisions based on the merit of the candidate, not connections. The key is in the application and interview process. To understand this better, we can look at the strategies I used while working as a Software Engineer at both Google and Facebook. These strategies have been effective in helping me and others gain interviews and ultimately secure positions at these prestigious companies.
Strategy 1: Cold Messaging Engineers for Referrals
Outreach Strategy: I targeted Software Engineers on LinkedIn by searching for profiles of those with experience at Facebook. The goal was to request a connection and offer a personalized message. I went through about 700 profiles, sending a request to all of them. From these, 20 accepted the connection request, 10 agreed to a phone call, and 7 of those referrals actually helped bring me in for an interview.
Why It Works: Engineers who referrals are highly valued and are asked key questions such as 'how well do you know this person', 'how do their skills compare to other engineers', and 'why should we hire them'. Providing strong answers to these questions significantly increases the value of a referral. During phone calls, I shared information about my projects and experience to make a genuine connection and provide information to back up the referral. Discussions about real-world challenges and solutions in the tech field often lead to more strong referrals.
Strategy 2: Reaching Out to Recruiters Directly
Why Not Apply Online?: Online applications can be risky. If your resume is not a match, you might be blocked out of the system for 3–6 months. For example, I encountered this issue when my first application to Google did not get a positive reception, and I was blocked from the system for several months.
Contact Recruiters: Alternative approach is to directly contact recruiters. This way, if one recruiter isn’t interested, you can simply ignore that response and continue reaching out to other recruiters. To find a recruiter's email, you might explore online resources or find the common email format: [first-name][last-initial]@. If you can’t get the email, a personal LinkedIn connection request is a second-best option. Sending these requests consistently can yield responses.
