How to Secure Your Google Account and Delete Sensitive Data
If you suspect that someone has signed into your Google account without your permission, it’s crucial to take immediate action to secure your account and protect your data. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of securing your Google account, deleting your photos and contacts, and monitoring for further security threats.
Step 1: Secure Your Google Account
Change Your Password
To change your password, go to Google Account Security. From here, click on the Password section and change it to a strong, unique password.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Still in the Google Account Security section, enable Two-Step Verification (2-Step Verification). This adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a verification code in addition to your password.
Review Account Activity
Go to the Login security section and click on See recent activity. Check for any suspicious activity and sign out of any devices you don’t recognize.
Step 2: Delete Your Photos
To delete your photos, follow these steps:
Go to Google Photos
Visit Google Photos.
Delete Photos
Select the photos you want to delete. You can click on the first photo, hold down the Shift key, and click on the last photo to select a range. Then, click the Trash icon to delete them.
Empty the Trash
Go to the Trash found in the left sidebar and select Trash to permanently delete the photos.
Step 3: Delete Your Contacts
To delete your contacts, follow these steps:
Go to Google Contacts
Visit Google Contacts.
Delete Contacts
Select the contacts you want to delete. You can check the box next to each contact or select multiple contacts by holding down the Shift key. Then, click on the More menu and select Delete. Deleted contacts go to the Trash. To permanently delete them, go to the Trash found in the left sidebar and select Delete.
Step 4: Monitor Your Account
After taking these steps, keep an eye on your account for any unusual activity. Consider checking your other linked accounts for security as well.
