Musk has also spoken about the importance of finding water on Mars, as evidenced by his “Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species” speech in 2016. A notable news event from November 22, 2016 revealed a significant ice deposit on Mars, equivalent in volume to Lake Superior. This makes the idea of mining for water and establishing a colony underground more plausible.
Subterranean Living and Planetary Defense
One of the key ideas behind Boring Company's tunnel projects is the potential to build underground cities for better protection against harmful radiation and dust storms. This aligns well with the possibility of creating a sustainable human habitat on Mars. Instead of covering a habitat with soil or other materials, going underground could provide natural shielding.
By experimenting with tunneling technology on Earth, the company aims to scale down and adapt the technology for use on Mars. This is a logical step, as subterranean structures can offer significant advantages for future Martian colonies. The closer proximity to ice deposits would facilitate easier water refinement, further bolstering the idea of an underground settlement.
Risks and Challenges
