Have you ever felt that nagging voice telling you that it’s perfectly okay not to want to cook? Trust me, I’ve been there! Apart from a brief period, I’ve never really enjoyed cooking because, to be honest, I’ve never particularly enjoyed healthy food.

Now, I just go through the motions to ensure I have something to eat, but the idea of cooking often feels like a chore that I can avoid. However, it’s important to understand that just because something might be “normal,” doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to indulge in it. Consider the scenario at a recent Costco trip. While waiting to checkout, I noticed a woman whose cart was brimming with what I saw as a veritable treasure trove of junk food: fruit-flavoured cereals, snack bags, potato chips, soft drinks, ramen noodles, instant soups, taco kits, and even frozen burritos, all priced at around $500.

As someone who’s adept at feeding ravenous teenagers, I can confidently say that for a mere fraction of the cost, I could prepare a week’s worth of nutritious meals, rich in proteins, fresh vegetables, complex carbs, and desserts, that would satisfy those teens without breaking a sweat. Cooking doesn’t have to be fancy. It can be simple, nutritious, and not much more strenuous than trying to make Ramen noodles interesting for a fourth night in a row.

Why Should You Still Cook?

While it’s true that cooking can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially if you’re already tired or lazy, it’s still crucial to occasionally prepare at least some meals yourself. The financial benefits alone are significant, as consistently eating out or relying on frozen dinners can quickly drain your wallet.

Instead of spending hours looking for something to cook, consider preparing meals that require minimal effort. For instance, a pot of chilli can be an excellent choice. While it might not be the best option for those on a strict diet, homemade chilli is undoubtedly healthier than pre-packaged junk food and many of the “healthy” options served in restaurants. It’s nutritious, filling, and can easily feed a crowd.

It’s absolutely normal to sometimes have no desire to cook. We all have those moments where the thought of cooking just feels overwhelming. However, it’s important to recognize the value of cooking. Whether you’re feeding yourself or your family, cooking at least some meals can lead to significant savings and healthier meals in the long run. So, next time you feel the urge to order in or pick up a frozen dinner, consider the trade-offs and take a few minutes to cook something simple and nutritious.
