Is Life Better Without Social Media?

Reflecting on my journey away from social media, I've come to realize that social media is far from the unmitigated blessing I once thought it to be. In fact, the absence of social media has brought a surprising array of benefits that have significantly enhanced my life.

From my initial addiction to platforms like Facebook and Instagram, to my complete detachment in 2020 and 2021, I've gained a profound understanding of both the negatives and the positives of social media. In this article, I will explore my experience and the positive changes that ensued after I gave up social media.

Understanding the Power of Social Media

Many argue that social media is a powerful tool for connection and communication. It is undoubtedly true that the "cool" media aspect of social networking sites can be incredibly engaging, providing us with a platform to share our thoughts, experiences, and lives with a wide audience.

However, it is equally important to recognize the "hot" media elements of traditional news and print media, which are moderated and have the power to shape public opinion and discourse. In a digital age, moderated platforms can still provide valuable information and opportunities for intellectual engagement.

My Journey Away from Social Media

Broadly speaking, the complete detachment from Facebook and Instagram was not an overnight decision. I had arrived at the realization that my life was becoming more and more dominated by these platforms, as illustrated by the statement, “I lost so much of my life to those platforms, time I will never get back.”

I had a previous self who was heavily invested in the external validation, shallow and egotistical, and often unable to think critically. She clung to the “hive mind,” seeking approval and validation from an online community. But after my detachment, this persona became nothing more than a product of societal pressure and my own lack of self-awareness.

Detachment Process

After disconnecting from Facebook in 2020 and Instagram in 2021, I effectively severed ties with the personalities and personas I had cultivated online. Gone were the days of receiving likes and comments on every post, the endless scroll, and the constant need for validation. While initially difficult to adjust, the long-term benefits have been profound.

The digital detox period allowed me to reintroduce good habits into my life. I found myself reading more, praying more, and meditating more. I rediscovered the joy of cultivating in-person relationships and engaging in meaningful conversations that don't rely on likes and comments.

Impact on Socializing and Communication

The shift away from social media has had a significant impact on how I communicate and socialize. Gone are the days when everything was filtered through the lens of a social media profile. Now, my socializing is more genuine and authentic.

The reliance on text-based communications has not only strengthened my relationships but also provided a more personal methods of interaction. Texting friends, sharing thoughts and ideas, and discussing books or movies has become a cherished way to stay connected.

The Future of Social Media

While I am not advocating for the complete abolition of social media, I do believe that society would be much better off if these platforms were more focused on promoting positive behaviors and limiting their influence on our offline lives. It is clear that social media has the potential to be both a blessing and a curse.

As more people question the role of social media in their lives and as GMT approaches a new era of digital literacy, it is essential that we critically examine the impact of social media and work towards a more balanced and healthier relationship with technology.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my life has indeed improved without social media. The journey from dependence to independence has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I have reclaimed my personal space, deepened my relationships, and cultivated a more meaningful existence without the constant screen time. I am now more aware, more centered, and more content with who I am and what I do.
