Charge Rate and Battery Charging

With a 100W solar panel coupled with an MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller, you can expect to achieve a charge rate of 5-8A to charge the battery. This rate can significantly reduce the time required to recharge a battery fully from 0-100%. In ideal conditions, your battery can be fully charged in just 3 days. However, it's important to note that no battery can be fully depleted to 0, and for a lead-acid battery, a safe charge level is recommended to avoid permanent damage, typically around 8 hours.

Energy Output and Storage

The output of a 100W solar panel varies depending on your location and time of year. In northern Australia, where conditions are favorable, the panel can generate around 550-600 watt-hours (Wh) per day. In the UK, the same panel might produce around half that, approximately 275-300 Wh per day.

When it comes to lead-acid batteries, which are popular yet less efficient, the 75Ah battery would only offer about half of its theoretical capacity, around 367.5 Wh. This means that if you want to fully recharge the battery in a single day, a 100W solar panel is a suitable match in northern Australia. However, in the UK, a 200W panel would be more appropriate for a single-day recharge. For lithium-ion batteries, such as LiFePO4, the actual capacity might be around 700 Wh. Even with such a setup, a 100W solar panel might not be enough in both locations for a single-day recharge, with a 300W panel being more desirable.

Design and Usage Scenarios

Designing a solar energy system for specific needs is crucial. If you have a setup where a battery needs to be recharged over several days, a 100W solar panel could be sufficient, as seen in remote weekend cabins. These cabins might operate on a few hundred watts of panels to recharge massive battery banks (500-1000Ah) over extended periods.

However, for more frequent and immediate energy demands, consider the application and location. A 100W panel in the UK would be insufficient for daily recharging, given the lower sunlight hours. A 300W panel would be more appropriate for such scenarios.

Importance of Solar Controllers

To ensure the longevity and proper functionality of your solar system, using a suitable MPPT solar controller is essential. MPPT controllers are highly effective in converting the maximum amount of energy from the solar panel, making them a cost-effective investment. In contrast, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controllers are obsolete and should not be used, as they are very inefficient. While PWM controllers are available for under $10, their performance is far inferior to that of MPPT controllers, which justify their cost.
