Navigating and Understanding Function Keys on a Mac
How to Use Function Keys on a Mac: Navigating the Finder and More
When transitioning from a Windows environment to macOS, one of the first adjustments you might make is understanding how to use function keys. Windows systems typically use Ctrl F to initiate a find command, while macOS uses Command F for the same purpose. However, Mac keyboards also offer a bit more flexibility in terms of function key usage, depending on how they are set up.
Setting Up Function Keys on a Mac
By default, Mac keyboards have a fn key, which allows you to access the basic functions associated with each function key (F1, F2, etc.). However, if you prefer to use function keys as standard function keys in applications, you can change this setting.
First, open Launchpad or the System Preferences by searching for it in the Dock or Application menu. Navigate to the Keyboard preferences. Click on the Shortcuts tab, then select Services to check if the F keys are set up as function keys. If not, you can adjust the settings accordingly. To use the function keys in their default, function-based mode, you can uncheck the box that says Use F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys. This will activate the functionality of each function key on its own, without the need for the fn key.Using the Find Command on a Mac
This is where the Mac's command key (Command) comes into play. To perform a find in a macOS application, you would typically press Command F. This is the equivalent of the Windows Ctrl F shortcut.
Flexible Function Key Usage
Mac keyboards also offer a layer of flexibility that can be accessed using the fn key. If you've set your Mac to use function keys as standard function keys, pressing the fn key along with the function key (e.g., fn F7) will trigger the function associated with that key, rather than sending the function key itself.
For example, on my Mac, the F7 key has a speaker icon and a minus sign. By default, pressing F7 will activate a specific subroutine in the active application. If I press the fn and F7 keys together, my speaker volume will decrease.
Using the Function Keys on the Extended Layout
Some Mac keyboards, especially the external ones, have an fn key right beside the delete key. If your keyboard doesn't have an fn key, you can achieve the same result by holding down the Control key and pressing the function key you wish to use.
Conclusion
Mastering function keys on a Mac can significantly enhance your productivity in various applications. By understanding how to use the Command, fn, and Control keys, you can navigate and use your Mac more efficiently. Whether you prefer to use function keys in their default mode or as standard function keys, Mac offers plenty of customization options to suit your needs.
