The Triumph and Twilight of Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche, the towering intellectual and philosopher of the 19th century, achieved greatness with his works such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Beyond Good and Evil. However, his later years were marked by a tragic decline that exposed the humanity and vulnerability of even the most formidable minds.

From Collapse to Paradise

In January 1889, while Nietzsche was suffering from a severe attack of migraine in Turin, Italy, he collapsed in the street and was taken to a private clinic in Bern, Switzerland. This incident marked the beginning of his journey into insanity and his life as an invalid.

Despite some recovery in the summer of 1890, Nietzsche was confined to his old home in Naumburg. After the death of his mother in 1897, his sister, Elisabeth F?rster-Nietzsche, transferred him to Weimar, where she purchased a villa called Silberblick, or Silver View, in the suburbs. The villa was designed to accommodate Nietzsche’s physical and mental conditions, featuring a garden, hills, the lazy river Ilm, and a wide sheltered veranda for his sofa. Although Nietzsche eventually passed away in August 1900, the house now serves as the Nietzsche-Archiv, a library and museum that celebrates his legacy.

A Change of Heart

Nietzsche’s transformation during his later years was profound. His fierce pride and courage waned, and he became increasingly tender and gentle. In a vulnerable moment, he expressed his gratitude to his sister, Elisabeth: “You and I, my sister—we are happy!” His hand would often reach out to grasp hers. When Elisabeth mentioned Wagner, Nietzsche’s favorite composer, he exclaimed, “Den habe och sehr geliebt!” indicating that his old fighting spirit was all but gone. All he could remember were the joyous days and dreams of his youth.

Beyond the Frames of Life and Death

Nietzsche’s declining years were marked by a profound impact on those around him. His labors, though formidable, were both his glory and his burden. Eventually, the barren obscure years followed, and he died in the early morning of August 25, 1900.

The Question Controversy

The question of whether Nietzsche was happy or miserable is often hotly debated. It is possible that some intellectuals might find no pleasure in such debates, while others might enjoy the controversy for its intellectual stimulation. Still, it is hoped that one day, the world will recognize the honor that is due to men like Nietzsche, who, despite facing calumny, injustice, and loneliness, remained true to their vision of freedom.

It is indeed fine to face bullets for the sake of immortality and to receive a medal. But it is also equally noble to face criticism, injustice, and solitude for the truth that gives men the gift of freedom. Nietzsche’s life is a testament to this truth.

The legacy of Nietzsche is not just about his intellectual works, but also about the human spirit that endures and transforms in the face of adversity.
