Quadrate: Beta Testers Reviews of Quora's Video Feature

Recently, I had the opportunity to test out Quora's new feature that allows users to create and share short video clips directly on their mobile devices. This feature is still in the beta stage, so I encountered some unique challenges as a beta tester. Here’s my take on how it works and what I think about it.

Availability and Recording Capabilities

Quora's video feature is currently only available via mobile devices. You can't use it from a laptop; you have to record your video on the spot with your phone. This limitation might seem daunting, but Quora mitigates it by providing some basic editing tools right from your mobile screen. It's a bit like having a camcorder in your phone.

Interface and Editing Options

While the video recording and edit bar are compact, they are definitely user-friendly. You can see the basic editing options when you start reviewing your clips. From my mobile device, I could switch between the front and back cameras, although this can't be done mid-recording. This feature makes sense when you're trying to showcase something like a cinnamon bun, as I attempted to do but had to give up midway due to technical limitations.

Clipping and Upload Process

Once you've recorded multiple clips, you can review them, switch their order, delete, or trim them. The process of trimming a clip is straightforward and visually appealing. The UI makes it clear how to do this. However, a significant drawback is the cross-device editing requirement; you can draft from different devices, but you must submit the final answer from the original device. This could be a hassle for some users.

Technical Hiccups and Overall Experience

Try as I might, I encountered a common error after finalizing my text: an upload issue. This error message was certainly disappointing, but I was reminded not to be surprised by such glitches in beta testing. Once my video finally started uploading, I was met with the helpfully displayed message: “Enjoy me trying to figure out how to use this feature.”

Final Thoughts

My overall impression of the feature is positive. It's incredibly intuitive to use, making it accessible even to those without a background in video creation. However, there are some areas where improvements could be made. For example, the square recording frame might not work for everyone, as I struggled to fit my hair within it. Also, the limitation of on-the-spot recording on a mobile device is a significant constraint for those who prefer to plan and edit their videos.

Conclusion

While Quora's video feature is in its early stages, it has the potential to become a valuable tool for users who want to share visual content. Beta testers like me can help refine and improve the feature over time. Until further developments, the feature remains a useful but limited tool for Quora users.
