Remarkable Cleverness of Non-Human Animals
While personal witnessing isn't always a requirement for sharing stories, many notable instances of animal intelligence have been shared by countless witnesses across the globe. Two such instances involve a German wirehaired pointer named George and a cat, who both displayed remarkable problem-solving skills in their own unique ways.
George the German Wirehaired Pointer
As a teenage, I was introduced to a German wirehaired pointer named George. He was an exceptional example of a smart and problem-solving dog. During winter, lying on the floor near the front door could be quite cold, especially in upstate New York. On one morning, my father found George sleeping calmly next to our wood-burning stove, having dragged the rug near the warmth of the stove. This action exemplifies how problem-solving skills can benefit an animal in adverse conditions. Later, during a walk, George demonstrated further intelligence. He solved the problem of needing to defecate on someone else's lawn by urinating on a bush and allowing the droppings to hang off it as though they had grown there. This clever solution not only helped him avoid unpleasant cleanup but also showed his adaptability and cleverness.
My Ex-spouse's Nervous Cat
During my marriage, my husband, who was abusive, threatened to harm my cat on several occasions, which deeply affected me. One such instance involved a sudden fight where my husband declared that if I didn't believe him, he would find a dead cat when I returned home. Worried about my cat, I left to work in a state of constant anxiety. One day, after a loud argument, he once again threatened to kill the cat if I didn't believe his words.
When I returned home, I couldn't find my cat in our two-bedroom duplex. My husband assured me he hadn't harmed the cat, but I didn't believe him. As I sat on the bed, my cat suddenly appeared from the closet. He walked out, and I hugged and kissed him in relief. Excitedly, I asked him where he had been. He led me to his hideout, which was in the shadows of the closet. My husband returned and saw the cat, shocked. I calmly confirmed that the cat had just come out of hiding. From then on, whenever tension arose in the home, my cat would retreat to his secret hideout.
This clever behavior demonstrated the cat's ability to sense danger and seek safety, even when his human caretaker was in distress. His reactions were not only a display of intelligence but also a testament to his strong bond with me.
Conclusion
These stories of George and my ex-spouse's cat highlight the incredible problem-solving skills and adaptability that non-human animals can exhibit. These examples, while personal, contribute to the growing body of evidence suggesting that animals possess a surprising degree of intelligence and creativity in their daily lives. Understanding and appreciating these behaviors can enhance our relationship with animals and our recognition of their intelligent capabilities.
