Seeking the Truth: An Essential Principle in the Bible

Understanding and seeking the truth is a central theme in the Bible. It is not just about discovering basic facts or doctrines, but a process of spiritual growth and a profound relationship with God.

Defining Truth in the Bible

Some might argue that the Bible is a collection of lies, but this belief is rooted in misconceptions about the nature of divine revelation. According to Jesus, God’s Word is truth, and the Scriptures consistently refer to the entirety of His Word as 'truth.'

For instance, in Psalm 25:5, God commands His people to walk in His truth and seek His instruction. Similarly, in Psalm 119:160, the Bible states, 'The sum of thy word is truth...' This implies that seeking the truth involves deepening our understanding and belief of God’s revealed word from the creation account in Genesis to the end of the book of Revelation.

The Oracle of Truth

The Bible is an oracle of truth, revealing itself step by step as we seek it with all our heart and mind. As the book of Proverbs states, seeking the truth 'as for silver, and you keep searching for it as for hidden treasures' is the foundation of wisdom.

Matthew 7:7 also emphasizes the importance of persistent seeking, stating, 'Keep on asking and it will be given to you, keep on seeking and you will find, keep on knocking and it will be opened to you.' This principle of seeking was further affirmed by Deuteronomy 4:29, which promises, 'If you search for Jehovah your God from there you will certainly find him if you inquire for him with all your heart and with all your soul.'

Jesus is the Truth

Joy in seeking the truth is not only found in the Scriptures, but in the person of Jesus. John 8 and John 14:6 present Jesus as the truth that must be sought. He is the ultimate revelation of God, and His followers are called to seek Him sincerely and genuinely, knowing that they will find Him. 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life,' said Jesus in John 14:6, encapsulating the essence of seeking that truth which leads to salvation and eternal life.

Additionally, in 2 Timothy 2:15, the author writes, 'Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.' This command emphasizes the importance of rightly understanding and applying the word of God in our lives.

Practical Application

The application of seeking the truth begins with a humble heart that recognizes its need. Just as the psalmist in Psalm 27:8 expresses, 'When you said “Seek my face [in prayer, require my presence as your greatest need],” my heart said to you, “Your face O LORD I will seek [on the authority of your word].”' This desire and effort are rewarded as God opens the way for understanding and experience of His truth.

Believers are called to engage actively with the Word, to pray, and to seek God with all their soul and mind. Jeremiah 29:13 assures us, 'You will find rest for your souls.' This rest is not just temporal peace but a deep spiritual contentment and assurance found in truth and the directing presence of God.

Conclusion

Seeking the truth is more than a search for doctrine or knowledge; it is a journey of faith and relationship. It is a commitment to growing in Christ, learning from His word, and aligning one's life with the will of God. When we seek with sincerity and humility, we are led to the truth that brings life and salvation.
