The American Constitution: Uncharted Knowledge for Many US Citizens

In my opinion, the level of knowledge among US citizens about the Constitution is abysmal. Over the past year, through answering questions on Quora, I have come to realize that a significant portion of the population lacks basic understanding not only of the Constitution but also of how our government functions in general. Everyone should at least read through the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which are freely available online. This article aims to shed light on some lesser-known aspects of the Constitution, which most US citizens might be unaware of.

Education and Government Understanding

Back in high school, civics was the subject where I gained some basic understanding of government structures. Despite being semi-retired, this knowledge remains relevant. Many questions posted on Quora highlight the lack of knowledge about our governmental framework and the Constitution. Reading the Constitution and the Bill of Rights can provide a solid foundation for understanding the principles of our government.

Common Misconceptions

One of the most pervasive misconceptions is the belief that one can fight for the Second Amendment, plead the Fifth, and dismiss the Fourteenth Amendment at will. However, like tripling the value of an apartment merely by adjusting its 'estimated size,' such actions do not hold true in practical terms. People often feel entitled to such rights, but the reality is more complex.

Historical Context and Misinterpretations

The Constitution was not as revolutionary as many think. It was largely based on an understanding of the British Constitution, with a few adjustments. The office of the President was meant to be an elected constitutional monarch, essentially an apolitical figure ensuring everything functioned smoothly. The Senate was an appointed body rather than a hereditary House of Lords, and the House of Representatives was similar to the British House of Commons, excluding the rotten boroughs. It had a Speaker, and was the sole place where budget bills could begin.

A Specific Example: The Confederate Insurrectionists

One often-overlooked aspect is the treatment of Confederate insurrectionists. These individuals were disqualified from Congress, but not necessarily formally or individually convicted of any crime. The Supreme Court did not directly convict them. Instead, they were simply known for their actions. Alexander Stephens, a former Vice President and a key figure in the Confederacy, was not impeached by a senate vote. He was imprisoned for treason and then pardoned.

Conclusion and Call to Action

It is crucial to recognize these misconceptions and understand the true nature of the Constitution. Every American should take a moment to read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, ensuring they have a well-rounded understanding of our government. This knowledge can empower citizens to participate more effectively in the democratic process, leading to a more informed and engaged population.
