The Arduous Journey from Constable to IPS Officer: Vijay Gurjar's Inspiring Story

While it is generally understood that a police constable cannot directly become an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer, there are exceptions. One such remarkable individual is Vijay Gurjar, who, despite his average academic background, pushed through the ranks to achieve his dream of becoming an IPS officer.

Exception to the Norm

There are a handful of IPS officers in the United Pradesh (UP) who have been promoted from Sub Inspector (SI) ranks to IPS during the Phoolan Devi Crisis. Vijay Gurjar's case, however, stands out even amongst these exceptions. He began as a police constable in Delhi in 2010 and rose through the ranks to become an IPS officer.

Vijay Gurjar completed his 10th and Intermediate examinations with less than average grades—55 in 10th and 67 in Intermediate. Despite these modest academic results, he displayed an unyielding spirit and passion for public service. When he joined as a constable, he was introduced to the concept of civil services exams. This discovery ignited a lifelong journey of perseverance.

From Constable to Sub Inspector

Vijay dedicated extensive effort and hard work towards clearing the Sub Inspector exams. He succeeded and was promoted to the position of Sub Inspector in the Delhi Police in 2012. His journey did not stop here; he continued to excel and eventually became an Income Tax Inspector in 2013. However, his ambitions did not end there.

Chasing the Civil Services Dream

Motivated by his desire to become an IPS officer, Vijay Gurjar did not give up. He continued to prepare for the civil services examination and made an impressive fifth attempt in 2015. After years of dedication and perseverance, his hard work paid off as he cleared the civil services examination. He was promoted to the DySP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) IPS Cadre and retired as a DySP.
