The Attributes of God in the Psalms: Omnipresence, Omniscience, and Omnipotence

When we delve into the Book of Psalms, particularly verses 139:1-18, we are introduced to a profound exploration of God's attributes. The question is, are these attributes truly comprehensive, as the Bible suggests, or are they modern intellectual constructs?

Defining the Attributes

Jehovah, the true God, is the Creator of all. He is omnipotent, meaning He has unlimited power. He is omniscient, implying He knows everything. And He is omnipresent, indicating He is present everywhere.

These attributes are often taken to mean that God is responsible for everything that happens or could happen, suggesting that nothing can occur without His permission. However, if one possesses omnipotence and omniscience, then they are all-responsible for evil as well, leading to the paradox of an all-powerful, all-knowing being who permits evil.

Paradox and Logic

Some argue that these attributes are logically contradictory. For instance, if God is all-powerful (omnipotent), He can create a rock so heavy that He can’t lift it. This creates a paradox, suggesting that there might be limits to His power.

Another perspective is that there is only one limit that God cannot break - His promise. Once God makes a promise, it is untouchable, emphasizing the sacredness of His word.

Modern Intellectual Constructs

Furthermore, these modern intellectual constructs of attributes like omnipotence and omniscience are seen as part of the developmental stages of human consciousness. The intellectual consciousness, which is a phase humanity is currently passing through, creates abstract concepts. However, it is suggested that as humanity evolves, these empty and abstract words will no longer hold the same significance.

Existence of God

Perhaps the most significant question is, does God really exist? Some argue that since the universe could be infinite or finite, its existence cannot be proven. This non-proven state aligns with the belief that God does not exist.

Modern Perspectives on God

However, not all see God's absence as a negative. They find comfort in the idea of God as love, as spoken in many Christian teachings. While scientifically and historically, the evidence for events like the World Flood or the crucifixion are questionable, many still find meaning in the idea that God lives within them.

In conclusion, while the Psalms paint a picture of a powerful, all-knowing, and omnipresent God, these attributes are subject to interpretation. Whether God exists or not, and what form He takes, are questions that continue to be debated by scholars, theologians, and believers.
