The Average Weight of a Grenade: A Comprehensive Guide

The average weight of a grenade can vary significantly depending on the model and its intended use. Whether you are interested in common military grenades or specialized types, understanding the weight distribution can be crucial for both security and practical purposes.

Standard Hand Grenades

The average weight of a hand grenade typically ranges from approximately 0.5 to 1.5 pounds, or 0.23 to 0.68 kilograms. A good example is the U.S. M67 grenade, which has a standard weight of around 14 ounces, or 0.4 kilograms. However, other types of grenades, such as smoke or stun grenades, can vary in weight.

Common Grenade Models

A commonly used grenade is the M26 grenade, which typically weighs around 500 grams. The M2 also had a similar weight, ranging from 500 to 600 grams. The standard grenade in service has an average weight of about 2 kilograms.

Considering the range, grenades can weigh anywhere from 100 grams to 40 kilograms. For hand grenades, the range is typically between 250 to 650 grams, with an average around 400 grams.

My Favorite Grenade

One of my favorite grenades is the one that weighs between 250 and 300 grams. These grenades are bright red, contain 200 to 1200 particles, and create a real mess when thrown correctly. However, there's a fun twist: these grenades can actually be used as a food source in dire situations.

These grenades have a pH level of about 4.4, making them more acidic than lemons. They are rich in nutrients, with about 10 times the recommended daily dose of folate and 16 times the daily dose of vitamin K. This makes them a surprisingly nutritious and edible item, albeit not a conventional food source.

Specialized Army Grenades

There are several specialized types of grenades used in military applications, each with unique weight and design features:

Fragmentation Grenades (Pineapple Design): Weighing around 500 to 600 grams, these grenades are designed for maximum fragmentation upon impact. Concussion Grenades (Baseball Design): These weigh between 350 and 450 grams and are designed to cause concussive effects. Modern US Army Grenades: The US has shifted from the pineapple design to a round grenade filled with shotgun pellets. Additionally, flash bang grenades have become a standard issue.

The M67 AP Fragmentation grenade, a typical military grenade, weighs around 1 pound. Military personnel can typically throw this grenade about 30 yards. However, if you are not in the military, practicing throwing grenades is not advisable unless you have access to an inert practice grenade. It is important to remember that inert practice grenades are slightly lighter because they lack the Comp B filler.
