The first practical use of electricity in communication came in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. One of the earliest uses of electricity for a serious real purpose was the electric telegraph. In the 1790s, Italian physicist Alessandro Volta invented the voltaic pile, an early battery that provided a continuous current of electricity. However, it was the electric telegraph, introduced in the late 18th century, that truly utilized electricity for long-distance communication.
The early telegraph system used a series of wires, each representing a different letter. Monks acted as receivers, and a charged Leyden jar served as the transmitter. By observing which monks jumped into the air based on the signal, messages could be interpreted and transmitted. This method, while primitive, was a significant step forward in communication technology.

In 1886, Frank Julian Sprague invented the first practical DC motor, which further enhanced the capabilities of these communication systems. The First Practical DC Motors and Their Inventors
The practical DC motor was a revolutionary invention in the late 19th century. Several inventors, including Mátyás ányos Jedlik and William Sturgeon, played pivotal roles in the development of these motors. Jedlik invented the first commutator DC motor in 1827, while Sturgeon invented the first commutator-type direct-current electric motor in 1832.
Sturgeon's motor was powerful enough to turn machinery, and Thomas Davenport, an American inventor, patented a similar motor in 1837. These motors, although successful in generating power, faced challenges due to the high cost of primary battery power. Despite these setbacks, they laid the foundation for further developments in electric motor technology.
The Birth of Modern Light Bulbs
