Given that the Milky Way alone contains an estimated 400 billion stars, even if a tiny fraction of these planets host some form of life, the number of potential habitable worlds could be substantial. Furthermore, if even a small percentage of these planets developed technologically advanced life, the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy could be significant.

However, evidence of their existence is yet to be found. Several factors make this challenging. Firstly, the Sun, our closest star, formed comparatively late in the universe's history, approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Other stars exist that are much older than the Sun. Scientists believe that life on Earth began at least 3.8 billion years ago, just 750 million years after Earth's formation, suggesting that the conditions necessary for life can arise relatively quickly.

Yet, as human beings, our technological prowess emerged much later. Modern human beings began populating the planet just 300,000 to one million years ago, and our capacity for technological advancement is a mere 200 years old. The ability to conduct space flight developed only about sixty years ago, a relatively recent achievement in cosmic terms.

Physical Barriers and Communication

The distances between stars are mind-boggling. On average, stars are separated by distances of about five light years, which translates to 47,300,000,000,000 kilometers or 29,390,000,000,000 miles. These numbers are difficult to fathom, making travel between them a formidable challenge. Even extremely intelligent ETs may find interstellar travel impractical given the vast distances and current technological limitations.

The Milky Way's diameter spans approximately 105,700 light years. Given the immense size of the galaxy, it is reasonable to assume that any very advanced extraterrestrial civilizations might reside much farther away from our Sun. Although a few might be closer, we have no evidence to support this. Even if they exist, the question remains: how would they communicate or travel to Earth?
