The Importance of Mobile UI Design in Digital Health Platforms
Ignoring the impact of user interface design is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. I've seen countless applications that fail to prioritize UI in the way they should. The designs often miss the mark, leaving users confused and disengaged. At Pulse, we focus heavily on UI design, and our mobile app and web dashboard recently won prestigious Muse Creative Award and Davey Award for design, along with positive user feedback. Here’s why UI is crucial to the success of any digital health platform.
UI Highlights Value
The interface is the first impression users have of your app. A poor design can immediately make the user feel it offers little value, regardless of its actual usefulness. Many apps today are overly complicated. I, a ‘tech-savvy’ young tech company owner, often get lost when I open some of them, wondering, "What do I do now?" This reaction is unacceptable for patients, who have more critical decisions and concerns. UI must be intuitive, guiding users through every step clearly. Think of it as catering to the most difficult user base without alienating anyone. The design must appeal to a broad population and demonstrate clear value to almost everyone who uses the app.
The Interface is Your Connection to Users
The UI is the key to truly connecting with users. Ignoring it means ignoring this vital connection. Instead, consider who your app is meant for and how they will use it. Build the interface with your ideal users in mind. Let me illustrate with an example from Pulse. Our application is tailored for people undergoing joint replacement surgery, a demographic with an average age of 63. To connect with these users, we addressed several questions: Where will they be using the app—while in the hospital or at home on a recliner? Will they be using their phone or a tablet? Will they have the device in front of them, or will they need to perform exercises in a limited space?
For our patients, a significant number wear reading glasses, making larger buttons and text sizes essential. As our average patient population changes over time, our design must evolve. Someone who's 50 today might be more tech-savvy than someone who's 63, so we keep our design adaptable to changing demographics.
UI Simplifies Processes
Many digital health apps suffer from being too complex, requiring significant effort to integrate into hospital or practice workflows. We at Pulse prioritize simplicity in our design. Instead of requiring users to completely change their workflow, we make the platform as easy as possible for everyone to use. Our goal is to integrate seamlessly into the current workflow, making every interaction valuable. When I present our platform to groups or hospitals, I often hear the same response: “Wow, that looks so cool. I understand it. It makes sense. I want to work with that.”
A great UI design makes your platform accessible and valuable, ensuring that users see something they want to engage with immediately and feel confident in the app's promise of value. By focusing on these aspects, you can ensure that your digital health platform not only meets but exceeds user expectations, driving success and user loyalty.
