The Journey to Becoming a Professor: Insights and Influences

My journey to becoming a professor began with a simple yet profound moment in my high school art class. In the fall of 1971, during my junior year of high school, I enrolled in an art class taught by a remarkable teacher named George Williams. His class introduced me to an anthology of contemporary art criticism titled The New Art 1966, edited by Gregory Battcock. This collection challenged traditional art criticism, shifting its focus from evaluating the quality of artworks to explaining why seemingly unintelligible exhibits could be considered art.

Contemplating this new perspective on art criticism piqued my interest, and one day Mr. Williams recommended I attend a lecture by the artist Robert Irwin. Irwin, a professor at the University of California Irvine, captivated an audience of art historians, philosophers, psychologists, scientists, and fellow artists. The experience was transformative, as I suddenly realized that I wanted to spend my life in that intellectually vibrant atmosphere, surrounded by serious and intelligent people trying to define essential matters. The academic environment, with its pursuit of knowledge and engagement with essential questions, became a beacon to me.

Reflecting on my journey, I can draw parallels to the experiences of others who find themselves drawn to academia.
