The Quest for Human Settlement on Mars: Possibilities and Realities

In fact, underground living quarters could be necessary to protect against radiation from space and the planet's harsh exterior. This living environment would be so different from what we are accustomed to here on Earth, it would take some time to acclimate to Mars' weaker gravity as well.

Is Earth Special?

Our survival on Earth is not a matter of luck, but of environment. We thrive here because Earth's conditions suited our survival. This does not mean humans are special; rather, it is our unique cognitive abilities that set us apart. Only about 100,000 years ago, humans developed the ability to think and question, which paved the way for our technological advancements and, ultimately, our expansion into space.

The journey from a single-celled organism to the complex, bipedal beings we are today was certainly not predetermined or swift. The existence of life, including humans, was a matter of uncertainty and a combination of random events and natural selection. This unpredictability holds true not only for our species but for all life forms.

Even if minerals essential for life on Earth came from asteroids or comets billions of years ago, it’s plausible that similar conditions could exist on another planet. The universe is vast and mysterious, and every discovery brings more questions than answers. Could there be life on other planets that we cannot even imagine?

While it’s unlikely that humans, as we know them, could survive on other planets, other forms of life may exist.
