The Role and Usage of Library Classification Numbers in Journal Articles

Library classification numbers play a crucial role in organizing and locating physical items within a library's collection. These numbers specifically indicate the storage location of books, CDs, journals, periodicals, art prints, musical scores, charts, and other materials. Librarians use these numbers to know where to place new items, and patrons use them to find the specific resources they need.

Journal articles are no exception to this system. While different articles within the same journal may have their own classification numbers, the entire journal retains its unique classification number. This is because the articles are not physically separated into individual classifications; instead, the journal as a whole is treated as one unit. This system prevents redundancy and ensures a streamlined approach to organization.

The critical point about classification numbers is that they are unique to each item, not parts of the same item. For example, in a library, a specific article from a journal might have a classification number that tells you where to find the entire journal, not each individual page. Libraries may choose to organize journals by title and date, but a classification number still ensures that every item has a unique and consistent location.

In my previous library, we maintained a Clippings File, which was a system to save newspaper articles. These clippings were given individual classification numbers and stored in file cabinets. This meticulous filing system required significant effort, and after my departure, this practice was discontinued. It was too labor-intensive and impractical.

For magazine clippings, another method was employed. Magazines were stored by title and date in boxes, and after a year, they were bound into yearly sets. This also required considerable effort and was later abandoned due to cost concerns. The binding expense became too prohibitive, leading to the discontinuation of this practice.

Classifications, such as those used in library catalogs, are designed to provide a clear and structured organization of library resources. Each item, regardless of its subject or format, is assigned a classification number to ensure it can be easily located by users. This system not only aids in the physical organization of the library but also enhances the user experience by providing a straightforward way to navigate the collection.

In conclusion, while different articles within a journal might have different classification numbers, the journal itself keeps a single classification number. This approach ensures that the journal is stored in the designated location, and patrons can access the entire resource without any confusion. The importance of classification numbers in library catalogs cannot be overstated, as they serve as a crucial tool for both librarians and patrons in the efficient management and use of library resources.
