The Science Behind the Burns in Star Wars: Why Darth Vader Got Burned
Have you ever walked barefoot across a beach on a really hot day? Was there any lava nearby? Did it still make you go "fuck me, this sand is very hot"? Now imagine the sand is superheated by being in close proximity to rivers of flowing lava that not only superheats the air around you but the ground it touches. Now imagine walking barefoot across it. Still think Vader shouldn’t get burned.
How the Physics of Lava Burned Darth Vader
During a vicious lightsaber duel with Obi-Wan on the planet Mustafar, Darth Vader was severely injured. Though the lava did not directly touch his limbs, the heat from the flowing magma was incredibly intense. When Obi-Wan gained the high ground, he struck Vader down by slicing off his legs and left arm. Vader’s uncovered organic tissue would have been exposed to radiation and temperatures that cause third-degree burns. Without immediate advanced medical attention, his wounds and internal injuries from the fall into the molten shoreline would have caused further scarring and damage. This accounts for Vader's burnt and disfigured state that required the iconic suit and life support system to survive. Though he lost the duel, Vader's hatred and injuries cemented his transformation to the Dark Side of the Force.
Understanding Infrared Heat Radiation
How to say you know nothing if infrared heat radiation without admitting it. Simply put, the heat from the lava warmed up the air to the point where it ignited exposed skin. So Anakin/Vader didn’t have to physically touch the lava. Unlike earlier in the duel when he could concentrate and utilize the Force to keep the infrared heat at bay, the pain/shock of losing his legs allowed the radiation to touch him. The result - third-degree burns to his limbs, lungs, and body.
Very Hot Air Scorching Hot Ground, Clothes on Fire
Lava is hot enough that you can get burned simply by being close to it. His burns are actually more realistic than the preceding fight. Their clothes ought to have caught fire from radiated heat just by standing on something floating in lava and inhaling air right above a lava flood should have been enough to seriously damage their lungs. The intensity of the heat from the lava not only affects the skin but also the air and ground around, causing significant burns even without direct contact.
Conclusion
Star Wars is known for its fantastic and often magical elements, but the science behind the burns and injuries in Mustafar is grounded in the principles of infrared heat radiation and thermal physics. While the Force can control and manipulate the environment, the intensity of the lava and the resulting burns are a result of the objective laws of heat and radiation. Understanding these principles helps us appreciate the realism and complexity of the scenes in Star Wars, even when they involve mythical elements.
