The question of when electricity was discovered is one that has puzzled scientists and historians for centuries. Leyden Jar: A Key Invention
A significant step in the development of practical electrical devices was the invention of the Leyden jar in 1745 by two scientists who later worked together, Ewald Georg von Kleist and Pieter van Musschenbroek. The Leyden jar was a glass jar coated on the inside and outside with metal foil. This device was capable of storing an electrical charge, which was a crucial breakthrough in the storage of electricity.
Building on the work of earlier scientists, German scientist Otto von Guericke further advanced the field of electricity in the mid-1600s by demonstrating the production of static electricity through the rotation of a ball of sulfur with a crank.
Practical Application and Modern Inventions
The invention of the Leyden jar marked a significant milestone in the history of electricity, leading to the rapid development of various electrical devices. By the end of the 18th century, electricity had become a practical and accessible form of energy.
