When it comes to 4K video editing, the amount of VRAM (Video Random Access Memory) you need can vary based on several factors. Choosing the right amount of VRAM is crucial for a smooth and efficient workflow, especially when dealing with high-resolution video. Below, we will explore general guidelines and specific recommendations to help you determine the optimal VRAM for your needs.

General Guidelines for VRAM in 4K Video Editing

The minimum VRAM requirement for 4K video editing is generally at least 4GB. This may be sufficient for basic editing tasks and less complex projects. However, for more demanding workflows involving complex color grading, heavy effects, and multiple layers, a higher amount of VRAM is recommended.

For those who can work with 16-bit color, 16 MB of VRAM is sufficient. Modern video cards are not as limited by VRAM as those from decades past, but if you plan to do any 3D acceleration, video decoding, or gaming, you may need several hundred MB more to avoid unnecessary slowdowns.

The best way to determine VRAM requirements is to refer to the recommendations provided by the software manufacturer. Generally, for 4K video editing, software like Adobe Premiere Pro can often work with 4GB of VRAM, although it does not push the video card very hard. For DaVinci Resolve, which is more demanding, you may need around 8GB of VRAM.

Example Experiences

For example, my current card with 4GB VRAM allows me to edit HD videos on DaVinci Resolve but 4K with Adobe Premiere. I am planning to upgrade to either an RTX 3000 series or an AMD Radeon 6000 once they become available, based on performance and price.
