Types of USPS Package Holds

When a USPS carrier is unable to deliver your package, several factors can cause a hold. The reasons range from residential mailboxes to animals and hold notices. Let's break down each scenario:

Full Mailbox or Residency Issues

If your mailbox is full or you're not home when the delivery attempt is made, USPS policies are as follows:

10-Days for Full Mailbox: If your mailbox is full and everything is removed with a note, you have 10 days to retrieve all your mail and packages. Otherwise, your package will be marked RTS (Returned to Sender). 15-Days for Residency: If the carrier tries to deliver and no one is home, they will leave a peach-colored slip. You have 15 days to go to a nearby office, show the slip, and retrieve the package. Animal Interference: If an animal prevents the delivery, the package will be marked animal interference. The carrier will attempt delivery again the next day. If the animal is still there, they will leave another slip, and you have 15 days to go to the office and collect the package.

Business Disruptions and Vacations

In these cases, USPS policies are slightly different:

Business Closed: If the business is closed, USPS will attempt delivery the following day. Otherwise, they will send the package back after a day. On Vacation: Your package can be held for 30 days, but you may discuss extending this period with your carrier to accommodate your return.

Undeliverable and Rescheduled Packages

When a failed delivery attempt is made, USPS will leave a slip notification. You have the option to reschedule delivery or pick up the package. After 5 days, a second notice will be left, giving you another chance if you have not already picked up the package. If you do not respond within the next 10 or 15 days, depending on the initial attempt, the package will be returned.

International Mail and Special Holds

International mail has a unique process, with a 30-day hold period as the maximum. Beyond this period, it will be returned, unless you can provide evidence of forward address.

USPS PO Box Delays and Tracking

Returns to PO boxes are subject to different rules. Once a letter is placed in a PO box, it is considered delivered. The package can be held for up to 30 days until it is either collected or the rent is expired.

If you receive an overflow in your PO box, USPS will remove it, place it in a crate, and give you a yellow card to indicate the overflow.

The journey of a USPS package begins when it is placed in a container and transported to the nearest delivery point. The parcel is then removed from the container, sorted by the Parcel Sorting Machine, and assigned new tracking data.
