Defining a Cycle

A cycle in a battery is defined as a complete discharge to 0 and subsequent full recharge to 100. It’s important to note that a half-cycle is a discharge from 100 to 50 and then back to 100. As such, a 2000 half-cycles would equate to 1000 full cycles. This definition helps in accurately assessing the battery's performance.

It's crucial to understand that factors such as temperature, discharge depth, and charge currents can severely impact the battery's lifespan. Extremely low or high temperatures, excessive discharge or charge currents, and stratification, sulphation, and corrosion can all seriously damage the battery's life.

Typical Lifespan for an SMF Battery

For a typical sealed maintenance-free (SMF) lead-acid battery, the expected lifespan is quite variable. Assuming it is a deep cycle battery and never discharged below 50%, it might reach around 1500 cycles. However, if discharged significantly lower, the lifespan can drop to an average of only 200 cycles, which is a stark reminder of the negative impact of deep discharge.

If the battery is intended for high load applications, such as a car's starter motor, then its lifespan is even more limited. Discharging it even once to 0 can kill its performance permanently. In such applications, the best practice is to keep the battery permanently topped up and never below 50%. In this ideal use scenario, a car starter, it might last some 2 to 5 years. However, excessive discharge will likely result in the battery failing within a single day.

Solving SMF Battery Issues

One of the distinct issues with SMF batteries is the difficulty in repairing certain types of damage. Unlike open lead-acid batteries, where water and acid can be easily replaced, SMF batteries require more complex industrial-level maintenance. Rewetting the battery or replacing parts can be a labor-intensive and expensive process, often outsourced to professional services.
