Modern Reactor Fuel Consumption

Around 3.5 tonnes of this uranium are fissile, meaning they can sustain a nuclear chain reaction, while the rest is fertile, capable of being converted to fissile material through neutron capture. The actual percentage and total mass can vary depending on the reactor design and enrichment level.
While most of the uranium remains usable after a year of operation, a small portion undergoes transmutation into waste. This waste can be removed from the fuel, significantly reducing the amount of actual nuclear waste. Additionally, reprocessing the fuel allows for the precious fissile uranium to be recycled and reused.
Political and Practical Considerations
Unfortunately, most of the time, the fuel is discarded along with the waste due to political and practical reasons. The logistics of managing and recycling nuclear fuel are challenging, and politics often play a significant role in the decision-making process.
