When the Heart Sees What Eyes Cannot

When I was born, my heart felt something which my tiny little eyes cannot see. Something unconditional, eternal, precious, and an epitome of happiness - it was my mother's love, an endless and unconditional love. I am deeply grateful to her, my Amma, for all she has done and continues to do for me. Her lap is my favourite place, a blending space that offers solace and warmth. Thank you, Amma, for everything.

A Confused Optimist

It's a profound notion that the heart sees what the eyes cannot. Our eyes, while critical for vision, only communicate with the brain. However, the heart, often seen metaphorically as the seat of emotions, complements this vision by encompassing feelings and more abstract perceptions.

Many of us believe in the existence of God, but have we ever seen him? No, not with the physical eyes. But the heart tells us that God is present, guiding the good and bad that occur. Similarly, relationships such as friendship, love, and affection remain invisible to the eyes but are felt deeply by the heart. These emotions are the cement that binds us together.

Emotions Observed by the Heart

Our heart is capable of viewing the emotional state and feelings, whereas our eyes can only see the physical state of something. For instance, a person can have a beautiful smile and appear always happy, but only our heart can truly understand the deep and lonely side hidden from our brain and eyes. True understanding and bonding grow when our heart can grasp the inner feelings of others.

A Heartfelt Story

Let's illustrate this concept with a story:

Saru was a poor boy who lived in the city of Vishakapatanam, endlessly wandering the streets of Vizag. For his father's birthday, he and his mother managed to save 50/-. As they were preparing to surprise their father, they passed by a cake shop and were drawn to a lovely chocolate and vanilla cake. With great joy, they rested their eyes on it but then found themselves short of the final 50/- required to buy it. Just as they were about to leave, a stranger entered the shop and saw their predicament. This man, unfamiliar to them, paid for their cake without taking a penny back. Saru’s mother offered to give the money but the stranger simply replied, "No, I wanted to help." This act of kindness, motivated by emotional understanding, allowed the family to experience a joyful and unexpected surprise on Saru's father's birthday.

While the eyes saw only the poverty and the immediate need, the heart saw the deeper human spirit, the will to help, and the joy that followed. This story encapsulates how the heart sees beyond the surface and roots deeply into the reasons for human actions and emotions.

Conclusion

It's time to shift our focus from mere physical perceptions and to allow our hearts to guide us. The heart's wisdom can often lead us to actions and emotions far more profound than those visible to the naked eye. May each of us learn to see beyond the obvious, to understand the emotions and kindness that touch our lives, and to cultivate more empathy and compassion in our hearts.
