Who Owns Australian Telecommunications Company Telstra

As of my last knowledge update in August 2023, Telstra Corporation Limited is a publicly traded company, meaning it is owned by its shareholders. The largest shareholders typically include institutional investors, mutual funds, and retail investors. The Australian government was previously a significant shareholder but has fully divested its ownership. Historical Ownership

Originally, Telstra was not a private company. It began its existence as part of the public service: the Postmaster General's Department. In the 1960s, the posts and telegraphs were split into two departments, creating Australia Post and Telecom Australia. In the 1980s, Telecom Australia listed as a public company. By the 1990s, the company had changed its name to Telstra, and in part, it underwent a share offer for privatization. Eventually, it was fully privatized, transitioning from government ownership to that of the shareholders.

Current Ownership

Telstra is currently a publicly listed company. It allows for a wide range of investment across different sectors, including many super funds, companies, and individual investors, often referred to as 'mum and dad' investors.
