In my experience, and particularly from my time in Europe, I can state that RD is not a priority in India. In contrast, the Western world has a deep-rooted commitment to RD, which has been a key factor in their technological advancements. While Indian companies have started to undertake RD efforts only recently, with some notable exceptions, the technological gap between India and the West is substantial. Given the current trajectory, it would take India at least 40-50 years to catch up, which is a daunting timeframe.

Poor Mindset: A Hindrance to Progress

Another significant factor contributing to the lack of world-class product companies is the mindset of the Indian population. While India is not a resource-poor country, it is often believed that it lacks the right minds to drive progress. The current mindset is more focused on short-term gains and less on long-term sustainable growth. Politicians are often revered over those who have vision for the betterment of the nation. This mindset has led to a cycle of corruption, where political figures misuse state resources for personal gain, rather than investing in the country's future. Such a mindset not only hampers progress but also stifles innovation and entrepreneurship.

Copy-Paste Technology: A Common Phenomenon

When it comes to technology, Indian companies often rely on copying existing solutions rather than inventing new ones. This dependency on existing technologies has crippled the ability of Indian companies to innovate and contribute positively to the global market. It is disheartening to see that innovation is often viewed as a secondary concern, overshadowed by the focus on cost-effectiveness. This has led to a general perception that quality is secondary to cost, particularly in the manufacturing sector. The lack of focus on design, usability, and the integration of art with technology further exacerbates this issue.

Ease of Capital Availability and Business Models

There is also a significant issue with the ease of capital availability in the country, which has led many entrepreneurs to focus on service-based business models that require minimal upfront investment in terms of capital. While this approach has certainly played a role in shaping the Indian economy, it has not always fostered a culture of innovation. However, there is a growing trend among new-age entrepreneurs who are challenging these norms and are focusing on developing exceptional product companies that can compete on the global stage.

The success of world-class product companies in India is likely to be determined by how much the country can address these underlying issues.
