The rise in furnace filter prices in recent years can be attributed to several key factors. Let's explore each of these:

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruptions in the manufacturing and logistics industries. Factories faced shutdowns, and shipping delays became common, leading to a reduced availability of many products, including furnace filters. This constraint in supply directly impacted prices.

Increased Demand for Higher-Efficiency Filters

During the pandemic, more people were staying at home, leading to increased awareness regarding indoor air quality. As a result, there was a significant increase in demand for high-efficiency filters which, compared to standard filters, can be more expensive. This surge in demand, coupled with the supply chain issues, further drove up prices.

Raw Material Costs

The cost of raw materials used in filter production, such as fiberglass and synthetic media, increased due to supply chain issues and rising energy costs. These higher raw material costs are passed on to consumers, contributing to the overall price increase.

A Historical Perspective on Furnace Filters

In the 1990s, a MERV-1 or MERV-4 filter could be purchased for as little as 0.25. Over time, the prices for inexpensive HVAC filters began to rise. By the end of the decade, even inexpensive filters cost closer to 1.00. This trend continued, and MERV-1 filters no longer exist in the market, while MERV-4 filters now cost over 5 dollars each and are mostly closer to 10 dollars.

It appears that HVAC filter manufacturers have shifted focus towards high-end, high-margin filters, leaving the inexpensive products unsupported. This results in a limited selection of affordable filters for consumers.

Are Expensive Filters Worth the Cost?

The value of high-end filters is subjective. In my personal experience, I use inexpensive MERV-4 filters on the house walls, changing them every year. However, I have a large 6-inch-thick MERV-10 filter next to the blower unit, which I change every 2-3 years. This filter helps capture very fine dust particles, protecting the AC coil from being coated with a fine, talcum-powder-like dust.

Cost of Shipping

The cost of shipping large, lightweight freight can be substantial. Several years ago, I arranged for partial truckload shipping from California to Texas and found the cost to be very high. As shipping costs continue to rise, the affordability of cheap HVAC filters may become more challenging. However, it is surprising to note that despite this, no Mexican manufacturer has ventured into making cheaper HVAC filters for Texas, which is significantly dependent on HVAC systems.
