Differences in Potential
A difference in potential between two points forces electrons to move from the lower potential to the higher potential. This is the fundamental principle behind the flow of electricity. In a battery cell, ions form a path for electrons to be collected at the cathode, then moved to the anode, creating a positive potential there. If a conductor is placed between the cathode and anode, free electrons in the conductor flow from the cathode to the anode, completing the circuit.
This completed circuit is the pathway through which electricity can reliably flow. It's a structured approach that allows us to control and direct the flow of electricity, ensuring it behaves according to our needs. Without a circuit, electricity would spread out in all directions, potentially causing harm or wasting energy.
