Why is Adobe Flash Player Blocked in the New Chrome Version?

This can't be a serious question. Mostly because Flash has been blocked by Chrome for over 3 years. And it was on its way out for years before that. Many browsers stopped supporting it and stopped allowing updates years before that.

Rationale Behind the Blockage

Flash had many security flaws. Not just a few. It was absolutely absurd. And the number of patches it required was ridiculous. It seemed like every time they patched up a few things, more security issues came up. This went on for years and years.

During this time, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript improved significantly to what is now known as HTML5. Using these languages, it was now possible to do everything that Flash could do, but better, faster, and more securely. And as a bonus, it could be done without a third-party plug-in, which is a significant advantage.

Transition to HTML5

Gradually, developers started moving their content out of Flash and into HTML5. This shift has been ongoing for years, and today, almost zero sites still use Flash at all. The ones that do use it only do so because they lack the resources to update their content, and even that content is often years old.

The transition from Flash to HTML5 was driven by several factors, including the security vulnerabilities of Flash. These vulnerabilities made it difficult to maintain an effective patching program, which is crucial for the security of users' browsers.

End of Life for Flash

It's reaching the end of its life in December 2020. Google Chrome, Mozilla, and Internet Explorer will block Adobe Flash effective December 31, 2020, because of the difficulties maintaining an effective patching program. Maintenance of Adobe products is separate from other Windows-based security patches and requires a special solution.

Adobe, however, did not make the decision to discontinue Flash. They renamed their Flash animation software to Animate CC to avoid confusing the animation software with Flash. Adobe does not currently plan to discontinue Animate CC.
